What Is Vote Reciprocity and Why Does It Matter in Music League?
If someone always gives you high scores in Music League, do you tend to give them high scores back? Vote reciprocity measures exactly that — and the answer varies a lot between groups.
How it's calculated
For each pair of players (A and B), we compare:
- The total points A gave to B across all rounds
- The total points B gave to A across all rounds
A high score means the exchange is roughly equal — they rate each other's music similarly. A low score means it's one-sided: one player consistently rates the other's picks highly, but that rating isn't returned.
The normalized version adjusts for participation length and general generosity, so a player who gives everyone high scores doesn't skew the picture.
What high reciprocity usually means
Two possibilities. Either they genuinely like the same music and naturally vote for each other — or they've formed an implicit alliance and are propping each other's scores up. The Taste Twins chart helps tell the difference: if their cosine similarity is also high, it's probably genuine taste overlap. If their similarity is low but reciprocity is high, the tactical explanation looks more likely.
What low reciprocity shows
One-sided relationships are the most interesting. A player who consistently gives high scores to someone who never returns the favour is either just a generous voter in general (the Generosity chart will tell you), or they genuinely appreciate that person's taste more than anyone else does. Either way, it's something the standard leaderboard would never show.
These asymmetries are invisible during play. You'd only notice them by looking at all the votes together.
Why it matters
Music League is a social game, and the voting is where the social dynamics play out. Reciprocity shows you the shape of those dynamics — who's trading favours, who's generous without expectation, and where the imbalances are building up.
